MealLuma Privacy Policy

MealLuma, formerly PlateLens, sends only the current Photo or Describe request for AI analysis. A synchronous Photo image is not persisted in MealLuma storage.
What we collect
- Account information. Your Sign in with Apple identifier, optional Apple email and display name, subscription status, and device push tokens for notifications you opt into. You can also use MealLuma with an anonymous account without sharing your name or email.
- Profile details. To calculate your tracking targets you may provide details such as age, height, weight, goals, usual activity, and cuisine preferences. You can edit optional profile details in the app.
- Your meals. We store the dishes, nutrition results, portions, corrections, source references, and favorite status you save so you can see history, trends, and repeat meals. A synchronous Photo image is not stored with the meal.
Photo and Describe analysis
When you choose Photo, the image and any optional dish hint are sent over an encrypted connection to OpenAI to identify the food and resolve nutrition for the current request. When you choose Describe, the text you enter is sent to OpenAI for the same limited purpose. MealLuma does not send your profile, account details, saved corrections, or protein-display preference with either request.
These requests use store:false. OpenAI states that API data is not used to train its models by default. OpenAI may retain abuse-monitoring logs for up to 30 days under its API data controls. Hale Hearth does not use your Photo or Describe content to train models, sell it, or share it for advertising.
AI estimates are approximate by nature. MealLuma shows editable results so you can check the portion and nutrition before saving.
Label, barcode, and reference-food lookup
Nutrition-label text recognition runs on your device. If you save the result, the reviewed nutrition values become part of your meal log; the label image is not sent to OpenAI for label recognition.
For a barcode lookup, MealLuma sends only the barcode number to Open Food Facts. Open Food Facts returns a matching public product record when available. USDA reference-food search uses MealLuma's pinned USDA catalog and does not send your profile or meal history to USDA.
Retention and deletion
A synchronous Photo image is held only in the running request and is not persisted in MealLuma storage. The meal details you choose to save — such as the dish name, nutrition, source and correction — remain in your account until you delete them or your account.
OpenAI abuse-monitoring logs associated with a Photo or Describe request may be retained for up to 30 days under OpenAI's API policy, even though MealLuma does not persist the Photo image.
Deleting your account from within the app permanently removes your meal logs, profile, and account record from our systems. You can also email nora@halehearth.com from the address linked to your account; email deletion requests are completed within 30 days.
Your health data
Details such as your weight, goal, usual activity, cuisine preferences, and protein-display preference are used only to calculate and personalise the tracking features you choose. They are stored privately against your account and are not included in OpenAI Photo or Describe requests. They are never sold, used for advertising, or used by Hale Hearth to train models.
Purchases
We receive your subscription and purchase status from the App Store so MealLuma can unlock what you've paid for. We never see your payment details — Apple handles all billing.
No tracking
MealLuma has no third-party advertising, no tracking SDKs, and does not sell your data. We use your data only to run the service, process purchases, provide support, protect accounts, and prevent abuse.
Children
MealLuma is not directed to children under 13 (or the equivalent minimum age in your country), and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them.
Your rights
Depending on where you live, you may have rights to access, correct, export or delete your personal information. Email us and we'll help.
Changes
If we make material changes to this policy, we'll update this page and the date above.
