Common questions

How do I get the best photo scans?
Good, even light; the whole plate in frame, shot from slightly above; and one dish per photo where you can. Kidney Lens returns each nutrient as a range with a stated basis β€” when the plate is mixed or the match is uncertain, it widens the range or asks you to confirm rather than guessing. One tap lets you correct the portion before saving. That confirmation stays with your local log; it is not uploaded to personalise later photo scans. Photo scanning requires Sign in with Apple; the free tier includes one scan a day, while manual and barcode logging are always unlimited.
Why do I get a range instead of an exact number?
Because an exact number from a photo would be a lie. A flat photo can't weigh a portion, and food composition varies β€” so Kidney Lens shows the range it can stand behind instead of fake decimal precision. The underlying values come from USDA FoodData Central, the public U.S. government nutrient database; the app's AI only identifies the dish and estimates the portion. If you know better (you weighed it!), correct it before saving the local log.
What does the "PHOS" phosphorus flag mean?
Phosphorus isn't a required nutrition-label nutrient, and the phosphate additives in many processed, branded and restaurant foods are absorbed almost completely β€” yet they don't appear in nutrient tables. A number there would look reassuring and be wrong. So Kidney Lens withholds the phosphorus number and shows a flag: additive phosphorus likely β€” check the ingredient list for "PHOS" (as in phosphoric acid, sodium phosphate, pyrophosphate). Bring questions about additives to your renal dietitian.
How do targets work? Can the app set them for me?
No β€” and it never will. Potassium and phosphorus needs are individual, set by your renal dietitian from your blood tests; current guidelines (KDOQI 2020, KDIGO 2024) don't define one number that fits everyone. Enter the targets from your dietitian's plan in More β†’ Your targets, and Kidney Lens tracks your day against them as neutral rings with today’s breakdown. If you don't have targets yet, ask your care team β€” the app works fine without them, it just shows content only.
How do fluid, binder and medication logs work?
They're log-only. Fluid counts against a cap you enter (including hidden-fluid foods like soup, gelatin, ice cream and melon), and binder/medication entries record what you took with a meal. Kidney Lens never suggests an amount, a schedule, or a dose β€” those decisions belong with your care team.
What happens to my meal photo?
It's used only in memory for the scan and is never stored on our servers. The current version does not keep scan-correction records on our servers or use them to personalise later photo scans. A correction you confirm can be saved in your local log; neither the photo nor your optional note is retained in the Kidney Lens app database after the scan. The Privacy Policy has the full detail, including the disclosed processor and its handling terms.
How does scan consent work?
The photo scan requires separate, explicit consent before anything leaves your phone. You can withdraw consent at any time in the app's settings; that blocks future requests across your signed-in devices until you explicitly allow a new scan. The Privacy Policy identifies the current processor and what it receives.
How do I manage or cancel Kidney Lens Pro?
Kidney Lens Pro ($9.99/month or $59.99/year, with a 7-day free trial on the annual plan) is billed by Apple, so cancellation happens there: open Settings β†’ your name β†’ Subscriptions on your iPhone, choose Kidney Lens, and tap Cancel. You keep Pro until the end of the period you've paid for. Refunds are handled by Apple at reportaproblem.apple.com. The honest tracker stays free regardless.
How do I restore my purchase?
Open the paywall or More β†’ Subscription and tap Restore Purchases, signed in to the same Apple ID that subscribed. If Pro still doesn't unlock, email nora@halehearth.com and we'll sort it out.
How do I export my data?
Export is free for everyone β€” no subscription needed. Open More β†’ Export data to produce a local file you control; it stays on your device unless you choose to share it.
How do I delete my account and data?
Open More β†’ Delete account & data in the app. This revokes your tokens and permanently removes server-held data tied to your account β€” account rows, consent records, short-lived consent-dispatch leases, entitlement rows, scan counters, and any remaining legacy scan-service records β€” and wipes the on-device diary. If you can't access the app, email nora@halehearth.com from the address linked to your account and we'll do it for you. See the Privacy Policy for details.
